New moms have a lot to learn about themselves, their little ones, and everything else that comes along with moms. These new doctrines include breastfeeding, a new bodily function of which the baby has had no idea before motherhood.
Sometimes your milk needs to be pumped - to be used at a later moment, or when your body produces more milk than necessary to feed your baby, or perhpas you want to provide the other parent with the opportunity to feed the baby, or when the breastfeeding mother is not available to be with her child at mealtime.
There are many different kinds of breastpumps, as there are mothers. We introduce you to 3 different kinds of breast pumps in this blog, and perhaps you will the right one to suit your needs.

‍
Manual breast pumps
‍
A manual breast pump, as the name implies, will require a little manual labor from you. These breast pumps have a “handle” that is pressed together and released, which in turn creates a suction force and movement in the pump, and with this, milk starts to flow.
When choosing a manual breast pump, you should pay attention to:
- The massage pad, which will help you to get your milk flowing. For example, all breast pumps of the Philips Avent series have a nice and soft massage cushion, also in their manual pump.
- As few loose parts as possible, so that the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly is effortless. Good options are Emma Manual Breast Pump and Lansinoh manual pump.
- Availability of spare and additional parts, e.g. additional baby bottles. With the extra bottles, you can pump a slightly larger amount of milk at once and have it ready when needed. Avent's range is diverse, so there you can easily find what you need.
The Breastfeeding Association recommends manual breast pumps for mothers who pump less frequently. However, if you feel that you need more power and suction efficiency, consider an electric breast pump.

Silicone breast pumps
These breast pumps, which have gained high popularity in a short time, have delighted many nursing mothers with their quietness, effortlessness, and small size. The breast pump does its magic with the power of suction (which does sound a bit odd at first), which means there is no motor connected to it and does not require... well, almost anything from you! Many people like to use a silicone breast pump on one side to collect the milk while the baby is feeding on the other side, because the pump is so small and quiet that it does not interfere with the little one's feeding moment. Cleaning is also very effortless, as there is only one part in the pump (!).

Silicone breast pump is our recommended choice for the first breast pump or the breast pump to pack to your hospital bag. Many mums do not know how their body will start producing milk, in which quantities, or if it does it at all, before the baby is born and mum's body has started to produce milk. Hence, it will be also impossible to predict what kind of breastpump is necessary. However, the silicone breast pumps on the market are affordable and perfect as "first aid", before a more powerful pump is bought. And in case you won't be needing any kind of breast pump, the silicone pump functions as a milk collector too.
Using a silicone breast pump is really easy:
- Turn the neck of the pump "inside out” to make the setting easier, and then turn it back up. Your nipple should be about where the neck is. ‍
- Squeeze gently squeeze the bottle from the bottom of it to create a negative vacuum in it. Slowly release from compression.‍
- When milk starts to flow, you can leave the pump in place and let the milk drain into the pump, while doing whatever you want. ‍
- Once filled, pour the milk into the storage bottle and, if necessary, reinsert the pump and keep pumping. So easy!
In our selection you can find Emma breast pump silicone, as well as Lansinoh milk collector & breast pump.
Electric breast pump
If your needs include a) frequent pumping b) efficient suction power and c) fast pumping, then an electric breast pump might work for you. In the electric pumps, the suction power is stronger than in manual ones, reducing the time spent on pumping and thus speeding up the whole process. This may also be necessary if the milk supply is abundant, or sometimes it is just that the milk  flowing is easier with a mechanical pumping. In addition, electric pumps are a lot more effortless compared to manual breast pumps.
In the case of an electric breast pump, it is often considered whether the machine is inconvenient to handle, too loud to be around with, or a massive one. Fortunately, today, many electric pumps run on a battery, so you're not tied to the only corner of the couch where the power cord is enough. The most popular electric breast pumps of 2025 have been weareable, handsfree pumps, which are placed in the nursing bras. All the wearable pumps are rechargeable and very quiet.
‍

One of the most popular wearable breast pumps is Horigen Handsfree Easemore, which has multiple pumping, suction, and 2in1 settings to get your milk flowing. In addition, you can download the Horigen application on your phone, which allows you to control the breast pump without touching the pump itself at all. Information about milk amounts and your mood can be stored in the application. In the “Feeding” section of the application, you can also mark down how your baby was fed and the amount of milk that was fed, allowing you to monitor the baby's eating in a new way.
Another popular hands free pump is Lansinoh Breast Pump Wearable. This pump comes with a nice massage setting and you can an extra set of the equipment that needs to be washed (collection cup, valve, breast cushion, and membrane), so you can use one set, while the other is in the wash.
In addition to these, Philips Avent's breast pumps are extremely popular. Avent launched its own Hands-free Pump in the summer of 2025, where the same popular Avent-features are in a more compact and efficient package. Avent's SkinSense cushions are so soft and comfy, and the lightweight collection cups fit nicely in your nursing bra. For this Avent pump you can also get additional collection cups to have 2 sets of the washable equipment, just like in the Lansinoh model.
